Chapter 1

What It Means for Iron to Strengthen Iron

Michael E Hattaway

Welcome to Iron Strengthens Iron. I’m Dr. Michael E. Hattaway—retired clinical psychologist, men’s wellness coach, and, yeah, a practicing Stoic for most of my adult life. This is where ancient wisdom meets evidence-based psychology, where insight becomes action. Where men come to do the work—not just talk about it. Now, the whole philosophy behind this show—Iron Strengthens Iron—isn’t just a catchy saying plucked from the air. It’s a truth I’ve watched unfold, over and over, in the real world: true growth comes through challenge, accountability, and brotherhood, not sitting alone with your thoughts waiting for motivation to show up.

Michael E Hattaway

With a new year comes a renewed focus for Iron Strengthens Iron. A renewed focus where Stoic wisdom meets real-world action. Each episode moves you from insight to decision, from hesitation to follow-through—grounded in the A.L.I.V.E. Code: Awareness, Liberation, Integrity, Vitality, and Engagement. We don’t talk about change. We do the work. Let’s go.

Michael E Hattaway

The Stoics—guys like Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus—understood this long before we had words like 'resilience' or 'mental fitness.' They faced battlefields, plagues, exile, all of it. And yet, their wisdom rings true, even now. They knew: you don’t become strong by avoiding struggle, and you sure don’t build real character just by having good intentions. It’s the work—done together, with honest accountability—that forges something deeper.

Michael E Hattaway

Let me tell you about a time I saw this up close—working with veterans’ groups, men who’d seen just about every kind of adversity you could imagine. At first, most tried to handle everything solo, grit their teeth, and push through. But nothing shifted. The transformation only came when they stepped into a circle, dropped the mask, and leaned on each other—challenge by challenge, day by day. The growth I witnessed among those men? It was always mutual—a cycle of iron strengthening iron. On your own, you can get stuck in your own blind spots; with real accountability, you actually start to transform, bit by bit, for good.

Michael E Hattaway

So, that’s our foundation here: we don’t grow by accident, and we don’t become steady by going it alone. Alright, let’s dig a little deeper.

Chapter 2

Introduction to the A.L.I.V.E. Code Framework

Michael E Hattaway

See, over more than two decades of clinical work and coaching, I kept running into the same problem: men wanted to lead stronger lives, but kept slipping because there wasn’t a clear blueprint they could actually use. That’s why I built the A.L.I.V.E. Code. Think of it as a blueprint forged in grit, wisdom, and real trial-and-error. It’s five pillars—each not just a word, but an invitation for real action: Awareness, Liberation, Integrity, Vitality, and Engagement.

Michael E Hattaway

Awareness: that’s where you actually see yourself honestly, without excuses. Inspect your blind spots, call yourself out, and get clear—no hiding. Liberation: this is about letting go of patterns, stories, and baggage that are quietly running your life in circles. Think of breaking chains you forgot were there. Integrity: that’s alignment—what you say matches what you do, even when nobody’s watching. Vitality: it’s not just about muscle or endurance, but the whole spectrum—physical, emotional, spiritual energy. And Engagement: showing up, fully present, instead of coasting on autopilot or hiding in the background.

Michael E Hattaway

Now, these aren’t just abstract ideals. The beauty lies in blending evidence-based psychology—such as cognitive restructuring, habit theory, and emotional regulation—with ancient Stoic ideas about discipline, acceptance, and purpose. Those two worlds fit together like, well, iron and fire. You can’t just think your way into change; you need both the wisdom of science and the timeless principles to become resilient, not brittle.

Michael E Hattaway

Let me give you a quick example—I’ll call him Sam, though that’s not his real name. Sam was capable, successful on paper, but underneath… just burnt to a crisp. Disconnected from his family. He wanted to be present, but his engine was shot. We worked through the A.L.I.V.E. Code, one pillar at a time. He learned where he was running blind—where old stories about 'what a man does' were tying him up. He started living his values, not just talking about them. It wasn’t overnight, but he rebuilt his relationships, restored his health, and, more than anything, found steadiness in himself again. That’s what this work is about.S

Chapter 3

From Insight to Action: Doing the Real Work

Michael E Hattaway

Here’s the part most guys miss—we’re awash in information, advice, hacks, whatever you want to call it. Doesn’t mean a thing until you actually do something, consistently, especially when it’s hardest. There’s real danger in staying on the sidelines, thinking you’re changing just because you’re learning. Trust me, I’ve seen too many men—myself included, at times—gather knowledge but never translate it into new habits. That gap, between hearing and doing, is where most transformations go to die.

Michael E Hattaway

That’s where the true work comes in. Steadiness—what I’d honestly call the root of masculine strength—isn’t about being rigid or pretending life doesn’t shake you. It’s about building inner stability, so when life hits, you remain clear and grounded. That’s the promise of Iron Strengthens Iron: it gives you guideposts you can actually follow during the rough transitions—divorce, burnout, loss of identity, those times when you feel like you’re on shifting ground.

Michael E Hattaway

Let me get personal for a minute. Years ago, before ALIVE Code existed, I hit my own wall—my marriage was tense, I was busy helping everyone but not tending to my own fire. It wasn’t new knowledge that helped me; it was disciplined, daily action. Small habits—uncomfortable conversations, honest check-ins with my wife, workouts I didn’t feel like doing—shifted everything. The discipline of acting, not just intending, rebuilt trust in my marriage, deepened my sense of purpose, and, honestly, made me a better man.

Michael E Hattaway

So, if you’re listening, I hope you don’t just collect ideas today—pick one pillar, take one step, and do the real work. That’s iron strengthening iron, from the inside out. Thanks for joining me for this first episode. We’ll keep strengthening each other, one honest conversation at a time.

Michael E Hattaway

That’s the work for today. Remember—your purpose is defined by what you do, not what you intend. Every decision to act with integrity, to show up fully, to hold the line when it's easier to let go—that's the work that builds the man.
